Description: A cardiologist developed The South Beach Diet. His intent was to help heart patients and diabetics. By lowering carbohydrate intake and turning that intake into complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean fats and proteins. By eliminating all simple sugars is a great diet for someone with diabetes.
Review: This diet can do wonders if you can stick with it. It is made up of 3 phases. Phase 1 of course is the hardest because it totally eliminates fruit, bead, rice, pasta, potatoes, sugar, baked goods and alcohol. This can be very difficult for some people to get adjusted too. Also most of your weight loss in this phase is water. Carbohydrates contain a lot of water so you must remember to maintain the fluids in your body.
Phase 2 starts to allow those good carbs back into your diet. Good carbs include whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
The 3rd Phase helps you maintain your intake of good carbs but also allows you to have lean fats and protein. Once you have gotten to Phase 3 you will find that you can maintain your weight and have a healthy eating lifestyle.
The thing I liked the best was the supply of recipes that are included in this book. There are so many you never run out of ideas. It also gives you tips on how to makeover your own recipes and how to order your food if you go out to eat.
The support that comes with this book is wonderful too. You never have to worry about doing this alone. There are numerous ways to interact with other people who have dared to venture down this road.
Criticism: The bad part of this diet is that it is a complete turnaround from what most people eat on a daily basis. So you have to be motivated and have solid dedication to stay with this and make it work.
Also, if you don’t like or cannot tolerate dairy products you might want to look at another diet. Most snacks are based on dairy and soy is eliminated for the first 2 weeks.
